September/October Art Show - The Arc Studio

Written by Amy Hart | Sep 10, 2023 8:55:09 PM

The Arc of the Piedmont Studio will be showcasing their client art here at Dovetail from September 12 - mid-October.

The opening reception was Saturday September 23rd from 11:00 - 1:00. It was a nice day, but very rainy. For those of you who missed it, please join us for First Fridays on Friday October 6th for another reception.

Dovetail is donating our commission fee back to the Arc for this exhibition.  We are happy to do this for any artist who would like to donate a portion of their profits to a 501(c)(3) charity doing local work.

About the Exhibition

The artwork exhibited here was created by artists with developmental disabilities who belong to The Arc Studio collective in Charlottesville, VA. The exhibition demonstrates the role that art plays in offering opportunities for bodily and sensuous engagement with the material world. Each artist represented in this show uses their own unique visual idiom to communicate in ways that defy traditional spoken or textual expression yet offer powerfully evocative visual grammars.

Arc Studio artists and their work call us to question what art is and to expand the definition of who gets to be an artist. Their artwork dissolves boundaries between the able-bodied and disabled, artist and non-artist, maker and matter, self and world.

About The Arc Studio

The Arc Studio is a visual arts program and studio space located at The Arc of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, VA. The program provides an open studio environment where adult artists with developmental disabilities can create, experiment, explore, and connect through authentic art making experiences. Through the making and sharing of their boundary breaking work, Arc artists have formed meaningful relationships, developed new avenues of expression and communication, and pursued careers in the arts.

Studio founder and coordinator Amy Keenan Amago is a visual artist, art educator, and doctoral student at Virginia Commonwealth University. For a tour of The Arc Studio, to donate materials, arrange an exhibition, or get involved, you can reach her at 919-260-3108 or akamago@arcpva.org.
